The WSU Humanities Center invites faculty, students, staff, and the community to a Coffee Hour presentation given by Anne Duggan (Professor, French) and Jaime Goodrich (Professor, English) on Dissertation and Grant Writing.
Abstract: The prospect of dissertation and grant writing for graduate students can feel overwhelming. In this workshop, we will provide some basic guidelines to help students through the process. We will explore writing strategies, including: 1) limiting the scope of the study, often a hurdle at the beginning of the process; 2) foregrounding the study’s significance, or the “so what” factor; 3) explaining what the dissertation contributes new to the field and how it engages with previous research; 4) the “story” the dissertation is telling; that is, how do the chapters come together to make a larger argument? We will also address practical work strategies that can help you move forward!
