The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education invites faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to join distinguished social worker, educator, and advocate for social change Joycelyn Wormley, DSW for this training titled "Introduction to Strength-Based Reporting".
This training will discuss a new trauma-informed practice for professionals mandated to report child abuse. In this training, participants will learn how to identify and report protective capacities when making a child abuse report. The current practice for mandated reporters requires that a Suspected Child Abuse Report is submitted to Child Protective Services (CPS) when the professional has a suspicion of child abuse. While this process allows professionals to document essential information, it does not inquire about known protective capacities or family strengths.
This training will expand your critical thinking skills by showing you how to provide a more holistic assessment of the family. You’ll learn how to make a more strength-based assessment with the assistance of a tool specifically designed for mandated reporters.
This training would benefit anyone who provides direct services to children and families. Please keep in mind, this does not replace the required mandated reporting training. However, it will build on the existing knowledge and framework already established and will provide a more comprehensive view of the family when making a report to CPS.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a deeper understanding on the purpose of mandated reporting.
- Understand the connection between racial disproportionality and child abuse reports.
- Discover ways to identify protective capacities in families.
- Learn to use the Strength-Based Reporting tool
