Year of Focus One-Minute Film Festival and Year-End Reception

Return to Event

Dialogue isn’t just about exchanging words or being free to speak your mind; it is about listening, empathy, collaboration, and responsibility. It allows diverse voices to be heard and encourages meaningful discussions that can illuminate common grounds and prompt respect for differing perspectives and their value to democracy.  In this culminating event, the Wayne State University community and friends  will be able to view the short films that were created by members of the WSU community to illuminate the power of dialogue across differences. The winners of the One Minute Film Festival will be announced and a reception will follow.

One-Minute Film Overview

The One-Minute Film Challenge invites WSU community members to create compelling one-minute videos that highlight the importance of embracing dialogue across differences as critical to building and sustaining a healthy multicultural democracy. Participants are encouraged to explore themes such as understanding diverse perspectives, fostering empathy, working through emotions, and other elements that underscore the transformative power of dialogue in bridging divides. Videos can take many forms: narrative, documentary, and/or experimental and must convey a clear message about the role of dialogue in promoting democratic values. Whether showcasing personal stories of connection, illustrating the impact of listening, or reflecting on the challenges of dialogue in divisive times, each entry should inspire viewers to leverage the power of constructive dialogue to strengthen our communities and support democracy.
